Lesson Overview
Students are introduced to 3D Computer-Aided Design (CAD) using Shapr3D on iPad. They learn what CAD is, why it is used for precise 3D design, and how Shapr3D's intuitive touch-and-pencil interface makes 3D modelling accessible. Students will navigate the workspace, create basic sketches, use the Push/Pull tool to extrude 2D shapes into 3D forms, and explore the Body, Shell and Chamfer/Fillet tools. The lesson emphasises hands-on exploration and direct manipulation, building foundational digital fabrication skills aligned with the Singapore Design & Technology syllabus.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
- 1Explain what CAD is and describe why Shapr3D's direct modelling approach makes 3D design faster and more intuitive
- 2Navigate the Shapr3D workspace: open a new design, orient the view using touch gestures, and understand the grid and axes
- 3Create basic 2D sketches using the sketch tools (line, rectangle, circle, arc) with Apple Pencil or touch
- 4Use Push/Pull to extrude 2D sketches into 3D solid bodies
- 5Apply Shell to hollow a solid body and Chamfer/Fillet to soften edges
- 6Export a finished model as STL for 3D printing
Singapore Curriculum Alignment
Aligned to MOE Design & Technology: visualisation, modelling and communicating design ideas. Supports the Applied Learning Programme (ALP): computational thinking, design iteration and digital fabrication awareness. Shapr3D on iPad aligns with Singapore's National Digital Literacy Programme and the Personalised Digital Learning Programme (PDLP).
Prior Knowledge Required
- Basic iPad navigation (touch gestures, app launching)
- Recognition of simple 2D and 3D geometric shapes
- Basic understanding of measurement and dimensions
- No prior CAD experience required — Shapr3D is designed for beginners

Safety Notes
- Maintain good posture when using iPad — avoid hunching over the screen for extended periods
- Take regular short breaks to rest eyes and hands during screen-based work
- Keep iPads on flat surfaces when not in use to prevent drops
- If 3D printing, follow all printer safety protocols and supervise operation
- Ensure iPads are charged before the lesson to avoid interruptions
